Poland wins difficult match against Russia – 07.12.2013

Poland dominated the first group A match against Russia, but made the game difficult for themselves. Russia was by far the more effective team whereas Poland had trouble scoring, Poland still won 6-3.

The score after the first period was still only 1-0 to Poland, but the score didn´t reflect the game actions. Poland was the team having the possession and when Russia got the ball they made it impossible for themselves to open the game, as all forwards stood still behind the opponents. The first goal for Poland was scored by Maja Stenka, she got the chance to hit the ball three times the third one finally finding the net.

Russia surprised in the second period. Although Poland had the control and Russia took five penalties this seemed to give Russia more advantage and with Maria Okulova´s two shorthanded goals the score was 2-2.

Poland was sharper in the final period, even though they lost a penalty shot opportunity and again gave Russia two great shorthanded chances, the Polish scored four goals.

- That tight game was absolutely not necessary in any way. We missed so many chances and the game could have been decided within the first period. It was good for us to score the 3-2 goal. If that would have been scored by the Russian´s, it would have been a problem for us, Poland´s Nr. 31 Agata Plechan commented the match.

Okulova, thought the two shorthanded goals were lucky:

- We got way too many penalties that break our neck in that game. Luckily we scored twice when they had powerplay but this was not practiced. Now we will try to fight Finland and Sweden with our best performance.
