Switzerland breaks Norway, advances to semi-finals 7-2 in a fast paced and physical game in front of a huge Swiss crowd, (1-0, 3-0, 3-2).
Arena Riga was prepared for the 2nd game of the day, a quarter final match between Switzerland and Norway. The game went off real fast with both teams playing aggressively. The Swiss team came out with the 1st huge chance of the game. Switzerland appeared to have scored eight minutes into the game but it was waved off by the referee. At 10:55 in the 1st period, Switzerland shot from the center and the ball deflected off the goalie which he then struggled to make a save. Three seconds later, it was a 1-0 lead for Swiss. Norway was right there generating their chances but the Swiss goalie was top notch. A minimal lead for Switzerland after a very physical period.
Early in the 2nd period both teams exchanged some chances, with Norway having most of them but the Swiss goalie was good enough to keep them out. The pace of the game had slowed down a little but the quality of the game was still there. At half point of the period, Switzerland seemed to have taken charge on the field creating most of the offensive chances. It took the Swiss side to create a cross crease attempt after a mistake from a Norwegian defender to double their lead. The Home team got two back to back penalties and were forced to play 5on3, but they managed to hold them off. Even more impressively, the Swiss scored a goal right after the box play and got their own power-play time which was perfectly executed, putting Norway down by four.
A minute into the final period, Norway got called for another penalty and their player was off to the sin bin - once again putting Switzerland in a power play situation. While not much happened on the field, the Swiss side still had a big lead of the game on the score board and down on the floor. Norway´s chances were slipping out of their hands by the minute. Late in the 3rd period, Switzerland was up by huge six goals. Norway finally got their first goal 55:29 into the game after a Swiss player´s stick broke and the ball was retrieved in the offensive zone. Norway was also awarded a penalty shot which they took advantage of. While the Home side finished the game with a beautiful goal. Switzerland with a sweep,will go through to the semi-finals where they will meet Sweden.
