General information about Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE)

• TUE is for any treatment involving a substance or method on the Prohibited List. The use of Beta-2 Agonists (including inhaled formoterol, salbutamol, salmeterol and terbutaline) require a TUE for IFF Registered Testing Pool 1 (RTP 1) players. A TUE is also recommended for all other players using Beta-2 Agonists before entering IFF events.

• Medical evidence that need to be attached for the application:
  1) A complete medical history
  2) The results of all examinations
  3) Laboratory investigations and/or the imaging studies
  
  Minimum medical evidence for inhaled Beta-2 agonists:
  1) A complete medical history
  2) A comprehensive report of the clinical examinations with specific focus on the respiratory system
  3) A report of spirometry with the measure of the Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1)
  4) If airway obstruction is present, the spirometry will be repeated after inhalation of a short acting Beta-2 agonist to demonstrate the reversibility of bronchocontriction
  5) In the absence of reversible airway obstruction, a bronchial provocation test is required to establish the presence of airway-hyper responsiveness

• TUE application must be filled out by the personal physician of the athlete

• TUE application will be reviewed by the IFF Medical Committee

• If the TUE is approved, the athlete can begin treatment only after receiving the authorization notice from the IFF (except in rare cases of an acute life threatening condition for which a retroactive approval may be considered).

The process of applying a TUE:

1) Download the Therapeutic Use Exemption Form (The form is also found under Materials)

2) Have his or her physician to fill out the TUE Application form and attach the copies of all needed medical evidence (see table above) and then forward it all to the IFF.

Players should remember that according to the International Standards, the Applications should be submitted at least 21 days before participating in an event.
