Storvreta outscore SPV in the first semi-final — 06.10.2012This was a good old fashioned shoot-out, with Storvreta coming out as the team that stays alive in the 2012 Champions Cup. They managed to get the lead in the last period with an amazing three goals in 23 seconds! They had to fight hard to hold onto that lead, but in the end a single goal was enough to see them through to tomorrow´s final, with a 9-8 win. This game got off to a flying start with a penalty after 7 seconds against Hannes Öhman for playing the ball with his hand, which was then turned into a powerplay goal by Mikko Kohonen with only 14 seconds on the clock. However, Storvreta cancelled that lead within a couple of minutes with a goal to German national player, Fredrik Holtz. The teams traded goals for the next 5mins and before the clock had reached 10mins there was already 5 goals in the game. The period ended at 3-3 and the spectators were making sure they weren´t late back to their seats for the next period. The first goal in the second period was scored by Öhman and what a shot! A bullet into the top corner of the goal shot directly from the pass from Mika Kohonen. The pace of the game was fast with action at both ends of the court, and it seemed the scoring had been replaced by defence, until the flood gates opened again and there was 6 goals in 6 minutes. Jyrki Holopainen got things underway, bringing the score to 4-4 and then Erik Härkönen fooled everybody with a spectacular 360 degree turn and shot that left Storvreta goalkeeper, Viktor Klinsten, looking completely the wrong way for the ball. Öhman and Härkönen each scored again and Henrik Stenberg and Ville Kuusela also both got their names on the scoresheet. With SPV leading 7-6 at the second break, this game was headed for a big finish. Would it be the tighter defence of one team that won it, or simply come down the team who could outscore the other? A bad tackle on Holtz right near the SPV goal gave Mika Kohonen a chance at a penalty shot, but it was well-saved by SPV´s second goalie, Julius Kivimäki. However, Kohonen, the best player in the world, wasn´t to be denied the next time he shot and Jarmo Ihme hardly saw the ball as it flew past him and practically came out the other side of the net, it was hit so hard. Stenberg and Öhman combined for the next and a few seconds after the restart another poor tackle close to the SPV goal saw Victor Andersson putting his penalty shot past Kivimäki. SPV gave everything in the last minutes of the match, being denied by the crossbar, the goal post and Klinsten, but Storvreta were able to hold on to their lead and will now wait for the next semi final to find out who they will play in tomorrow´s final. Best players were Holtz and Härkönen. Photos from the match can be seen on IFF Flickr page Video interview with Fredrik Holtz (Storvreta): Social media channels:
