Classic win in a classic game — 05.10.2012

This was the last match in the women´s Group B and the result decided the final positions in the group. The game was fought as though it was a final and was eventually won by Classic, 4-3 on penalty shots. Classic who finished top of the group will play Herbadent, and Piranha Chur will take on IKSU in tomorrow´s semi-finals.

Classic started the stronger of the two and the combination of Eliisa Alanko and Tiia Raitanen continued their good form in this tournament, scoring after just two minutes had been played. Mirca Anderegg replied for Piranha Chur a couple of minutes later and the game was back to where it had started. Later in the period, a defensive error during the Classic powerplay allowed Anne Suomalainen to pressure close to the goalpost and pass to Alanko for her to score her second goal and give Classic back the lead at 2-1.

Finnish national player, Tiia Ukkonen, playing her second season with Piranha Chur, evened the game up mid-way through the second period, and it looked like the good defensive work of the Swiss would see them hold Classic scoreless in the second period. However, Katriina Saarinen was able to score just before the break to put Piranha Chur back in the position of having to chase.

The third period was equal to a final, not just a group match. Both teams played fast and skillful floorball, creating chances at both ends and defending equally as well. The only score in the last period came when Adela Zulji´s long range, which looked like it was going to be saved by the Classic goalkeeper, took a deflection of a defender´s stick and found the net. Both teams continued to press but the game ended 3-3 and went directly to a penalty shot competition - the first in Champions Cup history.

Classic´s Hanna Sipiläinen was the first to convert a penalty shot and with Piranha Chur not being able to get any of their penalty shots passed Classic goalie, Kreeta Lakkala, it was Irja Lahtinen´s successful penalty shot that decided the game.

Best players were Flurina Marti and Tiia Raitanen
